What’s a squirt gun offense, you might ask?

Any offense that the logical retaliation would step “over the line” and thus you really can’t do it. The idea is that if you can’t retaliate like you like to, you can at least soak the perpetrator in water.

Huh? Well, read the full article and you’ll understand what I mean. I think it’s a pretty good idea. ;)

I was going to come home and write about all the fun and exciting incidents we had at work thing week. I was going to tell of the guy who cut his wife’s throat and the girl who tried to shoot her boyfriend. But this morning I had a meeting with my pastor about a few things and somewhere in the meeting he said something about how the devil really hates family.

It got me to thinking. If I had to make up a statistic off the top of my head (which is where 89% of stats come from, ya know?) I’d say that probably 4/5 of our calls at the police department are in relation to family problems. Husband and wife fighting over how a stepchild should be disciplined. Or a mother choosing her boyfriend over her son. It’s sad.

Over the years I’ve often heard about how the family is the backbone of a nation but I’ve never really let it sink in until now. When you pick up a teenager for burglary and ask him why he’s out at 2am in the first place and his response is because his mom won’t let him in the house right now because her and her boyfriend are ‘busy’ it’s hard to say that a stronger family wouldn’t have prevented it. When you get several calls a week where some teenage boy has ‘called out’ his step dad, it’s easy to see why it’s best to just marry right the first time.

I’m considering spending some off duty time up at the police station looking through some reports on what types of incidents we’re getting and see how many are related to family and then see how many of those could have been prevented had the parties involved only been married one time. I’m curious as to how many of our cities’ problems are due, in large part, to the deterioration of the family.

This is just more reason for me to support ideas like the Federal Marriage Amendment that Congress tried to pass last year. It seems that over the years the government has spent money on everything from after school programs to college tuition, from the TEA programs to child support enforcement. All these things are great and have helped a large number of people. But I think it’s time we started putting money into marriage. I think it is time for us to start putting money into bringing back the nuclear family instead of experimenting with every other idea on the block. I think it’s time Christians learn to live the life that they claim to believe in and show the world that with true, unconditional love, you can live with the same spouse “till death do you part” and it’s a good thing to do so.

So goes the family, so goes the city.
So goes the cities, so goes the state.
So goes the states, so goes The United States of America.

It’s time to bring back the family!

Recently someone loaned me a copy of a book called Verbal Judo. The book was written by a guy who was a english professor for a while and then became a police officer. He learned really quick that all his knowledge on the use of the english language didn’t cut it in the real world. While working as an officer he studied how some of the older officers spoke and how they handled themselves. This lead to his creation of verbal judo. What I’ve read of the book seems pretty good. I’ve already learned several things on how to deal with different types of people and persuasion in general.

Then, last night at church, my Pastor taught on communication. So, now I’m thinking God’s trying to tell me something. Anyway, Pastor spoke on the levels of communication and certain things that kill communication.

Between these two sources I’m learning that most of the time we’re speak, it’s totally unnecessary. And, out of all the talking I do, little of it is actual communication.

You know, I’m the type of person who loves to learn and I’m glad that I’m learning more about communication. But it’s really ‘funny’ that I never realized how little I knew about the topic.

This morning was an interesting shift. Since I’ve been on the midnight to 8am shift it’s been mostly dull. Very few calls, only a couple arrests. This morning was actually somewhat busy.

On one of the traffic stops I made (SUV with no tags) the driver was one of our ‘regulars’ who’s license was suspended. Well, as per our department policy the guy was placed under arrest. For the most part I don’t mind arresting folks, but something about this one guy causes me to just hate having to arrest him.

He’s in his early twenties, and in my talks with him (usually while transporting him to the county jail) he comes across as a very bright person with loads of potential. Unfortunately, it seems that he’ll never live up to his potential, and for some reason that bothers me… and I’m not sure why. It’s not like me to be ‘soft’ on crime…

Saw this a few days back but haven’t had the time to post about it…

A 25-year-old waitress who turned down a job providing “sexual services” at a brothel in Berlin faces possible cuts to her unemployment benefit under laws introduced this year.

Relax, this isn’t from the USA. The above quote was taken from Telegraph.uk about a woman in Germany.

According to the article, under German law if you turn down a job referral from the unemployment office, you could lose your unemployment benfits. The USA has similar laws. However, every since Germany legalized prostitution in 2002 hoping that this would help to combat trafficking in women and cut links to organised crime, unemployed citizens have had to choose between their need for income and their moral beliefs.

I’ve often heard about how prostitution should be legalized nationwide here in the USA. But the people who say they’re for it rarely look at it from all the angles. Articles like this are yet another reason I’m personally against it.
