Much has been said over the last few months about the Mozilla Firefox browser and how it seems to be gaining market share. Some people speculate that Firefox will soon capture the market similar to the way Internet Explorer crept up on Netscape some years back, but I imagine that’s just wishful thinking on the part of some folks who are anti-M$ and those who just routinely vote for the underdog.
Now, just for the record, I generally fit into both of those categories. But an article written by John Allsopp (Tipping Firefox across the chasm) gives some real food for thought on what it will take to truly bring Firefox mainstream. And while I don’t expect Firefox to have an actual tipping point, I do expect to see it continue to grow in the coming months.
How will we know when it crosses the chasm? Well, we all have our own gauges. My gauge on all things tech is my mom. When she switches from Internet Explorer to Firefox, then I’ll consider it mainstream. Until then, it’s still my personal favorite browser. And with that I bid you adieu while I go to look for some more cool Firefox extensions to install and play with.
