I was going to come home and write about all the fun and exciting incidents we had at work thing week. I was going to tell of the guy who cut his wife’s throat and the girl who tried to shoot her boyfriend. But this morning I had a meeting with my pastor about a few things and somewhere in the meeting he said something about how the devil really hates family.
It got me to thinking. If I had to make up a statistic off the top of my head (which is where 89% of stats come from, ya know?) I’d say that probably 4/5 of our calls at the police department are in relation to family problems. Husband and wife fighting over how a stepchild should be disciplined. Or a mother choosing her boyfriend over her son. It’s sad.
Over the years I’ve often heard about how the family is the backbone of a nation but I’ve never really let it sink in until now. When you pick up a teenager for burglary and ask him why he’s out at 2am in the first place and his response is because his mom won’t let him in the house right now because her and her boyfriend are ‘busy’ it’s hard to say that a stronger family wouldn’t have prevented it. When you get several calls a week where some teenage boy has ‘called out’ his step dad, it’s easy to see why it’s best to just marry right the first time.
I’m considering spending some off duty time up at the police station looking through some reports on what types of incidents we’re getting and see how many are related to family and then see how many of those could have been prevented had the parties involved only been married one time. I’m curious as to how many of our cities’ problems are due, in large part, to the deterioration of the family.
This is just more reason for me to support ideas like the Federal Marriage Amendment that Congress tried to pass last year. It seems that over the years the government has spent money on everything from after school programs to college tuition, from the TEA programs to child support enforcement. All these things are great and have helped a large number of people. But I think it’s time we started putting money into marriage. I think it is time for us to start putting money into bringing back the nuclear family instead of experimenting with every other idea on the block. I think it’s time Christians learn to live the life that they claim to believe in and show the world that with true, unconditional love, you can live with the same spouse “till death do you part” and it’s a good thing to do so.
So goes the family, so goes the city.
So goes the cities, so goes the state.
So goes the states, so goes The United States of America.
It’s time to bring back the family!
