As of 1600 hours yesterday, June 23, 2006 I officially ended my job with the Helena-West Helena Police Department. It’s been a fun, and aggravating, experience but I’m going to miss law enforcement. I was sitting at the house last night talking to my dad and realized that almost all my conversation revolved around stories from work. It got me to missing the job already. Once we get moved to Panama City and get settled in I’m going to try and get on part time at one of the agencies down there just to keep my life interesting. ;)

“A split Supreme Court ruled Thursday that drug evidence seized in a home search can be used against a suspect even though police failed to knock on the door and wait a “reasonable” amount of time before entering.” That was the heading of a story at CNN.com today.

Well, unless something fairly unexpected happens, it appears my family and I will be moving to Florida this July. However, at this point I’ve been unable to secure a job in the area. Now, I’m sure I could get a job flipping burgers or some such fairly easily, but I’d like to stay in law enforcement if I can. So, if any of you out in the Bay County area have any pull with your department, I could sure use some assistance.

I don’t know what it is about this season, but it seems we have a homicide in town every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Christmas Eve I get a call to come into work early due to a shooting. I suit up and get to town and find everyone gathered around a parking lot next to the local KFC. It seems that there was this fellow who couldn’t get over his ex girlfriend and insisted on trying to run off whoever tried to date her. Well, this fellow messed with the wrong guy this time around. As stupid as the whole thing was though, I feel bad for the families. One family lost a loved one on Christmas Eve, the other family lost access to a loved one Christmas day when officers caught up with him.

It’s a crazy world.

I just come across the article FEMA suspends Phoenix’s rescue team over firearms rule and I have to say that I can’t believe how ungrateful and just ignorant FEMA is. To ask these search and rescue teams to go into conditions such as those seen in New Orleans this past month and then to get their feathers ruffled because a team took some security? I can’t believe that FEMA honestly wants these search and rescue teams to go into these areas unarmed!

“Phoenix officials are threatening to refuse deployments in the future or possibly pull out of the federal agency altogether unless the rules are changed to allow teams to bring their own security, even if that means police with guns.”

I’ve read a handful of articles this morning on the topic and I must say that I’m with Phoenix on this one. If FEMA can’t see the logic of allowing a team to take armed escorts (U.S. Marshals no less!!) then why even deal with FEMA? Tell the bureaucrats to give off their arse and go pluck people from roof tops themselves.

Sound off folks, let me know you’re out there.
